How to choose a photographer

A family photo shoot is so much more than the capture and delivery of photos. In the hands of the right photographer, it can be an experience that will bring you closer to your loved ones.

The most common feedback I receive from clients is that they loved the experience as much as their resulting photos — and that the time spent together will be cherished by everyone.

Consider these three qualities

Rapport

A heart-centred photographer will put enormous effort into getting to know your family and building a relationship from the moment you book your shoot.

During my family photo shoots, I build rapport with your children as soon as we meet, introducing myself and getting them involved the shoot. I learn your names, shoot goals, concerns and important photos before I meet you, so I can direct your family with intention and confidence, which immediately puts you at ease.

You can get a feel for my personality and values by visiting my 'About' page. But the failsafe way of finding out how well I build rapport is to read the reviews of my clients.

Sensitivity

Just as important as rapport, is a photographer that is sensitive to the individual needs of your family.

Every family has diverse personality traits, inter-personal relationships, mental and physical needs. As a photographer, I'd argue the most important skill by far is the ability to recognise the needs of each family member during the shoot and adjust the energy and direction to suit.

After 15 years of practice, my super power is crafting a joyous experience and producing heart-felt imagery, regardless of the situation.

Expertise

No doubt it's taken you a fair amount of time and effort to bring your family together, so choose an experienced photographer who can keep the shoot flowing seamlessly.

I don't have to pause for each shot to fumble with the camera's settings or move you multiple times to find the flattering light.

Once you've been photographed by an expert, you'll love the experience just as much as the resulting shots.

“There is nothing more important than the choosing a photographer that will skillfully and delicately guide you through the entire experience from preparation, to delivery of your precious memories. A photo shoot has the potential to be a joyful and memorable experience for every family member — both young and old.”
