What is your style?

I mostly enjoy photographing in natural light and aim to express emotion and connectivity between loved ones.
A photo shoot with me is fun and never too serious.

What lighting do you use?

I use the beauty of natural light and often use a reflector.  My subjects are normally placed in covered or open shade, rather than full sun and I prefer to shoot in the late afternoon soft light.

How long does a portrait session take?

A DELUXE SHOOT usually lasts between 60-90 minutes, depending on the subject. NEWBORN shoots last longer to allow for feeds and settling. If we are capturing some fantastic photos towards the end of the shoot I won’t limit our time together (unless you have other commitments). Children are unpredictable and therefore I am very flexible with time. Please choose a time for your session that best suits your children, allowing for sleep and meal times. If you think this duration is too long for your young children, perhaps a MINI SHOOT (20 minutes) may suit you better.

Where do you take photos?

The location of your session is completely your choice and I work with you to find a location that will reflect both you and the style of photos you want.  There are some beautiful spots around Brisbane that I can suggest, from beaches or forest to urban locations. I am also happy to come to your family home or your local park. If you have a specific location in mind, please let me know.  I love to explore our beautiful land, so if you’d like to venture further away I can usually accommodate your request for a small travel cost.

What areas do you service?

My portrait fee for the MINI SHOOT includes travel within a 10km radius of Ashgrove 4060 (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia).  The DELUXE PHOTO SHOOT fee includes travel anywhere in Brisbane.  The GENERATION PHOTO SHOOT includes all areas within Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast or Toowoomba location OR your own property if it is not too far to travel in a day.  If you are further away than this, please contact me and we can talk about your requirements.

How do I know when you are offering special deals?

Subscribe to my INSIDER eNEWS (at the bottom of this page) so that you are the first to hear about exclusive offers before they are released to the public.  JKP INSIDERs are emailed surprise insider discounts for:

  • Limited portrait packages each season
  •  Discounted photography packages for key dates like Australia Day, Valentines Day, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Senior Graduation and Christmas.
  •  FREE digital files in return for modelling time (portfolio building shoot) before they are released to the public via Facebook, Instagram and traditional marketing channels.

When do you photograph newborns?

If you're after posed photographs, I will need to capture your newborn within the first 12 days of life so your little one will curl easily and will happily be moved into different posing positions.  Any later than 12 days and newborns tend to be more aware of their surroundings and not so eager to co-operate. Also, baby acne/milk spots typically appear around 2 weeks of age. I recommend that you book your newborn session while you are still pregnant so I can block out some time for you around that date. Then all you need to do is contact me when you give birth and we can set a time to meet as soon as you are able. I am more than happy to come to you in the hospital or in your home if you are feeling like staying in your PJs!

What happens if there is bad weather on the day of the shoot?

If there are poor weather conditions on the day of your session, such as rain, storm or strong winds, we will need to reschedule. I will call you at least 3 hours before the session to confirm if the session will go ahead or not.

What happens if my child or family members are sick on the day of the shoot?

These things happen! If possible, please give me at least 24 hours notice prior to the time of your session so that I can make arrangements for another family to fill your spot. Occasionally I may have hired special equipment or props for your session and I still have to pay for these unless I can give adequate notice of cancellation. I’m also a Mum and pay for non-refundable after-school childcare to be child-free for your session.

What can I expect during the shoot?

I like to arrive before you at the location (unless it is your home) to explore, set up my equipment and test the light. I will start your session by capturing the important photos you have requested in your Client Brief (the most requested are a variety of family photos, individual photos of your children, sibling photos, children with Mum, children with Dad etc.), and then I allow the children to take the lead and explore their surroundings. During this time I capture some candid images of the children individually and also your family’s interaction. When your children are feeling comfortable with me, I will offer some direction to style your images and capture a stunning authentic family portrait. We finish off with some cheeky games and a few photos of Mum and Dad together.

Can I bring extended family members, like my parents and my sister’s family?

Yes! GENERATION PHOTO SHOOTS are very popular and are a great way to share the cost of a photo shoot and purchase of images.  I am able to capture a complete (extended) family photo with siblings, parents, partners and children, individual families, siblings, cousins, grandparents and grandchildren and if time permits – some romantic images of each couple.  Grandparents LOVE and treasure the resulting photos.

Give me a call or ENQUIRE HERE and we can discuss the options.

What do I wear?

Typically, when choosing what to wear it’s best to select an outfit that is timeless and classic. Wear something that expresses you and brings out your best features.  If you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, then your photos will show this. Tell me about any ideas you might have – even if you think they may be silly. If you are having a family portrait shoot, please speak to me first and we can coordinate your wardrobe if you like. Clothing should complement each other.

Your wardrobe is always discussed during our pre-session consultation by phone or email. I ask that you avoid licensed characters (like Dora the Explorer, Barbie, Toy Story etc.), branded logos (like Mossimo etc.), and clothing that is too tight or low cut.  This type of clothing is distracting by drawing the eye away from the faces of the subject. Small logos or emblems are OK.  Printed t-shirts on children can be fun as long as they aren’t licensed.  Please feel free to bring a couple of outfits if you are not sure.

Personal touches (e.g. fun hats and accessories, some favourite boots or a frilly tutu) are encouraged!  If we are photographing at your home you will have access to all your cherished toys or selected items from your favourite hobbies, so we can definitely incorporate anything you would like.  I particularly enjoy this side of the shoot, so please don’t hesitate to ask me for suggestions.

How long after the session do I receive my photos?

It normally takes about 2 weeks to prepare your images for your Reveal & Ordering Appointment. If you book a MINI SHOOT I will usually have your photos ready much sooner. A GENERATION SHOOT can take 3-4 weeks to edit.

This time is spent in my digital darkroom (many hours on my computer) editing and crafting your photos – cropping, rotating, removing flaws and distracting items, correcting colour tone or unavoidable colour casts, adding textures, adjusting hues/saturation/brightness/contrast in part of each photo, resizing and sharpening for the viewing size. In the meantime, I will provide you with a sneak peek of a selection of your images on my blog within a week of your session date.

How do I order my prints or products?

Shortly after your sneak peek of photos from your session I will contact you to arrange a time for your Reveal & Ordering Appointment.

Can you touch up my wrinkles or Photoshop out a pimple?

Yes, any image you order will retouched to your liking, at NO EXTRA CHARGE.  I am professionally trained in Photoshop retouching, including -

  •  cropping and/or slightly rotating individual images for best subject impact,
  •  removing or blending distracting background elements,
  •  lightening or removing eye bags and blemishes (e.g. pimples, insect bites, scars, wrinkles, uneven skin tone or pigmentation, veins, freckles, bruises),
  • body contouring (e.g. re-shaping arms, legs, waist, breasts, stomach, neck, nose, chin, forehead etc. where possible),
  • thickening or extending hairlines,
  • removing lint from dark clothing,
  •  minor alteration to colour or shape of clothing,
  • brightening eyes, and
  • whitening teeth.

Every portrait session includes one composite image, which is moving a head/face/expression from one photo and compositing it into another photo to ensure you have the best expression of every family member.

Do you offer special print packages or collections?

Yes.  I offer a studio specials each month and these will be available to you at your Reveal & Ordering Appointment. I also offer digital file packages, where you can pre-purchase (payment plans available) your photo shoot and digital photographs at a considerable discounted price.  All past clients of Joanna Kate Photography receive a 20% LIFETIME DISCOUNT on all products.

Can I get my prints now and pay for them later?

Yes, absolutely. I now offer PAYMENT PLANS from 3-6 months, where you can buy now, pay later.

Can I share my photos with family and friends?

Absolutely! After your Reveal & Ordering Appointment your images will be uploaded to a private online gallery. I will give you a password to log in to your private gallery and you may share this password with your family and friends. Your online gallery will be available online to view for a period of one week.
